Resonator or "Dobro" guitars were originally designed in the 1920s to be louder than regular acoustic guitars, which were overwhelmed by horns and percussion instruments in dance orchestras. Either wooden or metal bodied, they are prized for their distinctive tone with bluegrass music and the blues.
